For Hardwick, New Regime Elicits "Unlimited Possibilities"

Posted Apr 1, 2013

San Diego Chargers center Nick Hardwick has bought into new Head Coach Mike McCoy.

It didn’t take Nick Hardwick long to buy in to what his new head coach is selling.

“He’s intense,” the starting center said when asked about his new coach and what he’s learned about him.  “He’s direct. He’s excited and we’re going to win…It’s just a matter of us committing. And committing and buying in to what he’s selling and what his program’s going to be. It’s just everybody getting on board. If everybody does get on board then the possibilities are endless as to what we can do.”

Hardwick is set to embark on his 10th professional season. McCoy will be his third head coach during his lengthy career, and according to the longtime center, there’s a big difference from previous regimes he’s been around.

“Really everything was different today,” he said. “The entire program is different. We’re working under a different philosophy and it’s just a matter of guys buying in to the philosophy and really getting into it, giving 100 percent and believing in the coaches. We’re going to get to where we need to be.”

The coaching staff isn’t the only new entity Hardwick found when the entire team reconvened at Chargers Park Monday morning.  He also came away intrigued by the changes made to the team’s weight room and practice fields.

“They have re-organized the weight room so coming in it’s just a different setup,” he said. “Different philosophies basically. Based on their philosophies they set the weight room up accordingly and they’ve changed little things like the lights. They put different light bulbs in so we walked in one day and I said ‘wow’ and really noticed a difference. I couldn’t tell what it was but there were lights. Just by the orientation of the room we know it’s different and you know you’re going to be doing different things and that’s good.”

Overall, Hardwick is excited by the “unlimited possibilities” he sees with his new team on this first day to prepare for the 2013 season.

“It’s unlimited possibilities,” he said. “You don’t know what your team is going to turn into and it’s just about coming together, getting to know each other real well and spending time with each other. In our room in particular, we’ve got a whole new group of guys to get to know and to make something of it and figure out what we’re going to be as a line and then the offense is going to figure out who we’re going to be as an offense and then as a team. It’s all going to happen. Every little phase is going to happen that same way. Who are we going to be. What kind of tone are we going to set.  They’re unlimited possibilities at this point. Everyone is starting at the same point. It doesn’t matter if you won the Super Bowl or if you were the 32nd team in the league. There are unlimited possibilities right now.”
