Football Activities Ramp Up With Phase II

Posted May 6, 2014

It's beginning to feel a whole lot more like football with the start of Phase II.

Phase I of the Chargers offseason conditioning program was devoted mainly to strength and conditioning as well as physical rehabilitation.

Now, it’s starting to feel a whole lot more like football around Chargers Park as Phase II kicked off this week.

During this three week portion of the offseason, individual player instruction and drills are permitted for the first time.  Coaches are also able to work with the players although no live contact or team offense vs. team defense drills are allowed.

While Phase I is a very important step in the process, the players understandably were looking forward to the beginning of Phase II.   This is especially true for Donald Brown, who was able to take handoffs from Philip Rivers for the very first time.

“It’s nice to finally get on the field,” the new running back said.  “You start to hear the terminology and start working on timing and building chemistry.  We know the work we put in now will pay off come the season.”

Meanwhile, Vincent Brown explained how things really start to ramp up with the beginning of Phase II.

“Everything picks up a little bit,” he said.  “You’re getting back into it with the plays and getting used to that whole process again.  That’s a very important thing.”

This also marks the first chance to mingle with some of the new coaches, including Frank Reich who was promoted from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator.

“It was a little different but not too much,” said Vincent Brown.  “Everybody has their own feel and different style.  He is demanding of what he wants and his expectations.  And we know his expectations of us.  So we’ve got to stay on our business and keep working hard.”
