Fluker and Watt Reunite Under Best Circumstances

Posted Aug 1, 2014

D.J. Fluker and Chris Watt look forward to anchoring the offensive line for years to come.

Five years ago as up-and-coming teenagers, D.J. Fluker and Chris Watt lined up next to each other as teammates in the highly regarded Army game for the West squad.

The two then went their separate ways with Fluker enrolling at Alabama while Watt attended Notre Dame.  Their path’s crossed again in early 2013 when they squared off in the BCS Championship Game and Fluker’s Alabama dominated Watt’s Notre Dame to the tune of a 42-14 blowout.

Watt watched as the Bolts drafted Fluker with the 11th overall selection a few months later in the NFL Draft.  He never would have guessed that just one year later they’d reunite after the Chargers drafted him in the third round this past May.

“It’s great lining up again next to Fluke,” Watt said.  “I played with him those years ago in the Army game and never would have imagined we’d play together like this in the NFL.  He went to Alabama and I went to Notre Dame, but I’m really glad we’re teammates.  He’s a great person, a great player and a great guy to work with.  I’m very excited to work with a player of his caliber.  We’re young and we’re just going to get better every day.”

Now that they are reunited, the two see themselves as a dynamic duo to anchor the offensive line for years to come.

“Knowing Chris will be on this line for years is a great feeling,” Fluker said.  “He’s a good player who wants to get better.  He’s come a long way already and is picking up the offense really well. He’s stepping up to the plate.”

Even though Fluker is entering his sophomore campaign, he is actually a couple months younger than Watt.  Still, he’s dolling out valuable tips having just gone through the grind as a rookie himself.

“He’s a rookie now like I was last year, so I’m helping anyway I can,” he said.  “We’re working a lot on communication.  Just having a guy like him next to me makes me feel more comfortable, especially since he is a hard worker who listens.”

Those tips have proved vital for Watt, who relishes any advice Fluker gives him.

“He’s helping out a lot, especially working on our communication,” he said.  “I ask all the time what he did, what his experience was like and how he got ready for the season.  I’ve asked him what helped him the most and if there was anything he regretted doing, and he’s answered all my questions.  I couldn’t ask for anything else out of him.”

Well, there is one thing he could ask Fluker; not to rub in the blowout loss in the BCS Championship Game.

“I can’t say anything back when he gives me those little jabs because we got killed!”

Don't forget, Saturday marks the team's annual FanFest at Quacomm Stadium.  It's always a highlight of the summer and is an event you won't want to miss.  Click here for more information.
