Final Cuts Loom in Coming Hours

Posted Aug 28, 2014

"The bad part of the business" is upon the Bolts as brass will make key decisions.

“The bad part of the business.”

That is what Head Coach Mike McCoy has repeated when asked about the upcoming roster reduction to 53 players.  The team must pare down from 75 by Saturday at 1:00pm, though many teams traditionally began waiving players as early as Friday.

The good news for the Chargers is that the play of many on the field in Thursday’s 12-9 win over Arizona will make for some heated discussions among the team brass.

“We have some tough decisions to make,” McCoy said.  “After watching the game from the sideline, you can tell some guys stepped up and helped themselves out.  But as an organization we’ll meet in the next few days and find the best 53 guys and move it forward.  Then find a few guys to help us on the practice squad.  But I’m proud of the way the guys worked.”

The goal heading into the night was to find out who best fits in constructing the 2014 San Diego Chargers most successful team possible, and McCoy believes they did just that.

“We’re trying to find the best 53,” he said.  “That was our number one goal coming out of this game, to find the best players to help our team win in the regular season.  That’s what it’s all about.  It’s about winning.”

Players on both sides of the ball made strong cases with the vast majority of starters sitting the game out.  On offense, Dontrelle Inman led all receivers with 54 yards on three catches while Marion Grice churned out 79 yards on 17 carries and Branden Oliver had 71 on 16 totes.

“I feel like I did well,” Oliver said after the game.  “I just went out there and left it all on the field.  So we will see what happens.  I think I made my impression.  I went out there and worked hard, but whatever is God’s will is the will I’m going to be in and we will see what happens.”

Defensively, Cordarro Law showcased his innate pass rush ability with a key strip-sack of Logan Thomas in the first half.  He also ends the preseason among team leaders in special teams tackles, adding a pair on the night.  Like many others, the coming hours will be nerve-wracking for the outside linebacker.

“I’ve been in this position before but it doesn’t make it any easier,” he said.  “I’m not going to sit around and pout or worry how it’s going to unfold.  More than anything it was important for me coming out this preseason to show myself I can play in the NFL.  That I can make plays in the games.  I’m not going to be bitter or unhappy if it doesn’t work out, but I definitely want to be part of this team.  It’s just out of my control now.”
