Familiarity an Early Theme of Training Camp

Posted Jul 25, 2014

A second year under McCoy & Telesco gives players a sense of comfort.

Last year’s training camp was uncharted territory as for the first time in six years, the Chargers had a new head coach and general manager.

After a successful 2013 season, quarterback Philip Rivers and the team are relishing a second year under Head Coach Mike McCoy and General Manager Tom Telesco at the start of training camp.

“I just think we know what to expect now,” Rivers said.  “Last year was a lot of ‘How’s this thing going to operate?’ with the newness of it.  But now we all know what to expect.  We all know what the schedule’s like, how the setup’s going to be.  We all know the terminologies.  There’s a level of comfort and I think all that does is allow you to play fast and play confident.”

Playing fast and playing confident is something McCoy is trying to capitalize on this year with the familiarity of the coaching staff.

“They (the coaches) know the tempo.  This tempo was a lot faster than it was last year at this point in time,” McCoy said.  “It’s nice to be able to come out here, especially with the players, having a general understanding of how we’re going to do things.  I think last year every time you made a different turn people weren’t sure which direction you were headed.  It’s a lot easier.”

Running back Danny Woodhead and outside linebacker Dwight Freeney are both entering their second seasons with the team.  Besides their knowledge of the system, both players discussed other reasons as to what makes 2014 different from 2013.

“My surroundings,” Woodhead said.  “I’ve been around everyone for a year; I’ve been in this city for a year so I’m going to be a little bit more comfortable with it.”

“Last year I didn’t know a whole lot of guys on the team,” Freeney said.  “I was new. The good thing is that I know all the guys out there (now).  From an enjoyment standpoint, it’s a lot better now.  The inside jokes and conversations over a year and the relationships with guys that you build, it’s priceless.”
