Exclusive Interview with D.J. Fluker

Posted Apr 25, 2013

In an exclusive interview with Chargers.com, D.J. Fluker talks about bringing energy and nastiness to the San Diego Chargers as well as protecting Philip Rivers.

Shortly after being selected with the 11th overall pick in this year’s draft, D.J. Fluker spoke with Chargers.com .  Here’s what he had to say:

Chargers.com: So first off, what was it like getting that phone call that you’d be a San Diego Charger?

Fluker:  It was very, very emotional for me. The first person I spoke with was Coach Joe D’Alessandris, the offensive line coach.  Then from there it was Head Coach Mike McCoy and I was very emotional and excited talking to him.  I shed a couple tears. I’m just so happy to be a part of this great organization.

Chargers.com: Did you have any sense that the Chargers were interested in you?

Fluker:  I didn’t honestly, but I’m thrilled they did.

Chargers.com: What would you say the biggest strengths of your game are?

Fluker:  My running game. I start off nasty and I wear my opponents down.  When it comes down to it over the game I make my opponents tired.  I also bring nastiness to the offensive line.

Chargers.com: What do you think you have to work on?

Fluker:  To be the best you have to work on every aspect of your game.  I’ll be working hard on every aspect from the run to the pass so there won’t be any flaws in it.

Chargers.com: Tom Telesco said he loves the energy that you play with.  Where does that come from?

Fluker:  That comes from within. I love to play with a high motor. I’m a guy that goes and brings it day in and day out.  You don’t have to lead me to it, I’ll get it myself.  With that (philosophy), there is no one that can compare to my work ethic.

Chargers.com: With Alabama you won some national championships.  Are you looking forward to bringing that winning culture here to San Diego?

Fluker:  Plan on it!  I plan on bringing it every day to practice. Plan on me bringing that every Sunday.  Plan on me bringing that to my offensive line.  That’s what I’m bringing to the table.  When I get there, everyone will realize it.

Chargers.com: Just listening to your voice I can tell you’re really pumped to come to San Diego.

Fluker:  I am!  I am very happy about it. I couldn’t be happier about it.  I can’t wait for the season.

Chargers.com: How familiar are you with the guys on the team?

Fluker:  They have a great quarterback in Philip Rivers.  I look forward to protecting him.  They had a decent year last year but it’s time to put them over the top. It’s time for improvement so I’m going to make the team better and bring that championship mentality.  That’s what I pride myself on.  I want to give Philip Rivers more time and take some pressure off him so he can make the passes he wants to.  I really want to be a part of the team and bring everyone together.

Chargers.com: So here’s your first forum to say something to the fans.  What do you want to tell them?

Fluker:  I couldn’t be happier to be a Charger and represent them and the city each Sunday.  So go Chargers!  I won’t let you guys down.
