Eddie Royal's Hot Start Continues with 3 TDs

Posted Sep 15, 2013

Wide Receiver Eddie Royal scored his third, fourth and fifth touchdowns of the young season in a Week 2 win.

The hottest receiver in the NFL is making everything look easy through two weeks of the season. Eddie Royal has scored five -- that's right, five -- touchdowns in just two games. He's the first Charger to score that many receiving touchdowns in a two game span since Antonio Gates in 2004.

The five TDs ties his career high in scores for a season, and we’re not even out of September yet.

"Eddie Royal is unbelievable," said quarterback Philip Rivers. "That's five touchdowns in two games and he's looking so good."

Rivers has reason to leave this game impressed.  Each Royal score was more remarkable than the next.

Early in the second quarter, Royal swung off the line of scrimmage and caught a pass from his quarterback with room to run.  But Eagles safety Nate Allen closed the gap, lowering his shoulder right between the numbers on the back of Royal's No. 11 jersey. With Allen draped all over him, Royal stretched out for the final nine feet and nicked the front pylon.

His second score was simple product of hard work.  Royal lined up in the slot on the right, fought off press coverage, and worked back to Philip Rivers when the quarterback rolled left. No defenders were in Royal's vicinity when he scored.

The last touchdown showcased his patience and agility.  On a bubble screen, he shuffled backward to wait for his blocks to develop. They did -- King Dunlap pancaked Allen and Chad Rinehart pushed Trent Cole aside -- and Royal ran through arm tackles for his third and final score.

Overall, Royal caught seven passes for 90 yards in addition to the touchdowns.  After the game, he remained humble and expressed how he’s happy he’s able to contribute to a win. Now he’s looking forward to the next one.

“I’m not really thinking about (all the touchdowns),” he said.  “It’s about our team and winning games.  We’re 1-1.  We have to think about next week.  It’s a good win.  We’ll celebrate in the locker room.  But we have to get focused on this next one.”
