ESPN Analyst Todd McShay Talks Draft

Posted Feb 19, 2013

During a conference call with media members, ESPN’s Todd McShay addressed the upcoming NFL Draft, including this week’s NFL Scouting Combine.

On this year’s quarterback class:

To put it bluntly, McShay isn’t overly impressed with this year’s group of QBs. Even though he thinks at least one will be drafted in the first round, he doesn’t have a true first round grade for any of them. Still, he thinks there is great depth at the position with as many as six or seven guys  being selected once the second round comes .  McShay has Geno Smith as the top rated passer followed in no particular order by Matt Barkley, Mike Glennon, Tyler Wilson, Tyler Bray, Landry Jones and Ryan Nassib.

On the read-option quarterbacks available:

Regarding the trend of read-option quarterbacks, McShay doesn’t expect any of the top QBs available to excel in that type offense. He thinks the best fit for one is Florida State’s E.J. Manuel, followed by Miami (Ohio) QB Zac Dysert and Arizona’s Matt Scott.

On wide receivers available:

McShay thinks there is tremendous depth at wide receiver this year, but warned that there is no stud player at the position.  He made a point to say that there is no “A.J. Green” caliber player, but emphasized that there are a lot of guys throughout the rounds that will make an impact.

On Denard Robinson:

For this week’s combine, McShay is most intrigued to watch former Michigan QB Denard Robinson, who is making the transition to wide receiver.  He says Robinson is too talented an athlete to not be a player in the NFL, but he needs to be a better pass catcher. Robinson struggled early on at Senior Bowl but got better as the week went on.  Still, he needs to improve as a natural pass catcher.  Right now, McShay has him as a 3rd or 4th round talent.

On Jadeveon Clowney:

Even though he isn’t eligible to be drafted this year, McShay spoke about South Carolina’s stud defensive end.  If he was able to come out this year, McShay thinks he would undoubtedly be the number one overall pick.  While many have suggested Clowney sit out this year to avoid injury, McShay is against that line of thinking.  He says Clowney is “far from perfect” like any prospect is, and still has a lot to prove.
