Dwight Freeney Upbeat, Pleased with Progress

Posted Jun 17, 2014

Dwight Freeney is taking a patient approach in his return from a torn quad.

While Dwight Freeney has been a regular participant during the offseason program, he’s mostly been on the side field rehabbing from a seriously torn quad suffered last September.  The Chargers have taken a patient approach with the pass-rush demon, but Tuesday’s start of minicamp marked another milestone in his return as Freeney participated in individual drills alongside his teammates.

“I’m coming along really (well),” he said.  “We’re taking baby steps here.  We’re not playing the Cardinals yet, so for me it’s making sure I have confidence in what I’m doing.  The training staff and everybody is really excited about where I’m at.”

If the team had a game scheduled tomorrow, Freeney believes he’d be ready to suit up.  But at 34 years old, the 13-year veteran knows it’s important to pace himself to be as fresh as possible once the season does begin.  While in the past he may have been more eager to go 100% full blast this early in the process, he knows the wisest path is the one the team is preaching.  That’s taking a slow, steady approach to build him back up to be ready for the opener.

“I’m doing little things now, and I practiced a little bit today at the beginning,” he said.  “They put me in when they want to put me in, and I’m fine with that.  I’m an older guy here in year 13, so I’m not complaining about it….I can definitely play right now if I had to.  That’s yet to be seen once we start having contact and stuff like that, but as of where I am right now, I’m right on track.”

The outside linebacker is also confident in his recovery based on past success he’s experienced returning from serious injuries.

“I’ve had a couple serious injuries in my life,” he said.  “I had a Lisfranc on my left foot and I was able to come back.  Now I had this quad tendon tear on my left, and right now I’m flying around.”

Finally, Freeney admits that while his goals remain the same, he has added a brand new one to his list.

“Every year I’m trying to get the same type of things out of it,” he explained.  “Being a vet, helping the team however that is. And now obviously this year you add a couple things to it.  You work a lot and completely play as hard as possible.  But not only that, prove to everyone that I’m back.  I think that’s always going to be there regardless of if I got hurt or not because there is always that question mark….It’s not only showing everybody, it’s showing myself that I can still go out there and still be very effective.  I can still play with the top guys in the league.  That’s just my mentality.  Until someone proves otherwise I am going to believe that.”
