Dwight Freeney Suffers Torn Quad

Posted Sep 30, 2013

Dwight Freeney has been diagnosed with a torn quad.

Dwight Freeney left in the second quarter of Sunday’s game, and on Monday, Head Coach Mike McCoy announced that he has suffered a torn quad.

“He does have a torn quad,” he said.  “We’re exploring all the options.  We’re getting all the medical advice (on) what’s in his best interest moving forward.”

McCoy didn’t mince words, admitting that losing a player of Freeney’s caliber is a setback for his team.

“Anytime you lose a great player like Dwight Freeney, it’s a blow to your football team” he said. “Offense, defense or special teams, when you lose one of the greatest players of all-time on your team with an injury like that during a game, it’s tough.”

McCoy was asked if the team’s lone Injured Reserve-Designated to Return tag, which allows a player to go on IR but come back at a specified date later in the season, was an option for Freeney.  The  head coach responded that all possibilities are on the table.

“We’ll let you know in the next couple days, but we’re exploring all the options,” he said.  “He’s talking to some people.  We’re talking to people.  We’re really kind of figuring out what is the best way to go.  But (IR-Designated to Return) is a possibility.  We’ll just wait and see in the next couple days the severity and exactly what our plan is going forward.”

So how does McCoy plan on filling in for the former NFL Defensive Player of the Year?

Larry English has played there,” he said. “The three of those guys outside have rotated all year long, so that’s where we’ll be right now. ... Give a lot of guys credit for stepping up. Tourek Williams went in there and I believe played 10 snaps and did a nice job when he got to go in and play.  That’s what it’s all about.  We’ve been saying it all year long, all offseason and training camp; it’s kind of a next man up mentality.  Give the credit to the coaches for adjusting plans from time to time or the next guy just filling in.”
