“He called me in so I came down and we sat down and had a conversation about the defense and the kind of direction he wanted to take this team,” Butler said. “I love it. I’m all in.”

As for the message McCoy gave when he addressed the team Monday morning during phase one of off-season conditioning; well, Butler liked what he heard then as well.

“He said, ‘Look the future’s now. We’re not rebuilding. We want to win now.’ That’s what we’re paid to do and that’s what we’re going to do or we won’t be here.”

After missing his rookie season after tearing his Achilles tendon during training camp, Butler pieced together back-to-back standout seasons to emerge as one of the brightest young inside linebackers in the NFL. Now, He is looking forward to going out on the field, competing and showing his new head coach that he has what it takes to lead the Chargers defense.

“All of our veteran guys are pretty much gone,” he said. “Some of those guys that I looked up to growing up and they’re not here anymore so like I said, we’ve got some young guys that are going to have to grow up fast….(There’s) a little pressure, but if anything I relish the opportunities to go out there and show what I can do,” he said. “I think I speak for a lot of guys on the team in that we relish the opportunity to go out there and show these new coaches what we can do.”
