Donald Brown: "The Sky's the Limit"

Posted Jul 27, 2014

San Diego’s free agent acquisition happy to be in America’s Finest City.

It’s only the first week of training camp, but offseason acquisition Donald Brown can’t hide his enthusiasm about running through the trenches.

“Everybody’s eager, everybody’s anxious to go out there and actually play football,” Brown said.  “(They’ve been) good, productive days.”

The 5-10, 207-pound running back signed a three-year contract with the Chargers in March after playing five seasons in Indianapolis.  As a Colt, he had 551 carries for 2,377 yards averaging 4.3 yards per carry.  An extremely reliable runner who protects the ball as well as anyone, he also poses a threat in the passing game with 83 career receptions for 767 yards and two touchdowns.

Having played with two great quarterbacks in Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck, Brown was very vocal about his admiration for taking handoffs from Philip Rivers.

“(Playing with Rivers) is not different.  He’s a great quarterback, an even better person, and a true student of the game.  It’s truly an honor.”

They say all good things come in threes, and the addition of Brown to the backfield with Danny Woodhead and Ryan Mathews surely demonstrates that.  On the first day of camp, fellow running back Danny Woodhead described the mutual respect he, Mathews, and Brown have for one another.  Back in March, Brown called the trio a “three-headed monster” and now in late July, he doesn’t feel any differently about his fellow teammates.

“It’s a great group of backs,” he said.  “By far my favorite room I’ve ever been a part of.  (They’re) just great guys and we’re all in this together.  It’s going to take all three and more to get through this season.”

As for the expectations Brown has for the season?

“The sky’s the limit,” he said.  “We hold ourselves to the greatest and highest expectations possible.  We’re going to go out there, we’re going to compete, we’re going to play hard, we’re going to complement each other and we’re going to go out there and have fun.”
