“The fans,” he answered matter-of-factly. “They’ve been tremendous. They’ve had great energy out here. They are cheering us on and I can hear them calling my name, which is always up-lifting. I think that they are going to be right on pace with keeping us motivated heading into the season.”
However, the fans weren’t the only things that have impressed Cox so far. The cornerback continued to rattle off several other answers, including the team’s wide receivers, fellow corner
The fifth-year cornerback is entering his first year with the Chargers and was an early free agent signing by general manager Tom Telesco. A third-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2009, Cox registered a team-leading 12 interceptions over the last four seasons, more than doubling the total of the next closest Jaguar.
“I enjoy going against those guys because they are good players,” he said. “These guys are tall, quick, fast, have long arms, have a ton of range and are very, very skilled. It makes you have to adapt and adjust your game to what they do. So playing against big league guys like them every day I can only imagine it takes your game to another level.”
The 6-foot-1, 195-pound product out of William & Mary also made a point to acknowledge the strong start to camp for his bookend corner, Shareece Wright. As a result, Cox sees big things ahead for the duo.
“What I like about Shareece right off the bat is his confidence,” he said. “Stepping into a role as a starter can be one that catches guys off guard. But I think Shareece is extremely confident and assertive. That makes me excited and gives me the confidence that we will be a successful pairing. We’re going to get the job done. We’re going to work hard, compete every day, stay in our playbooks, stay positive and optimistic about our abilities and take what comes.”
Something else giving Cox optimism heading into the season? Defensive coordinator John Pagano.
“His defense will put us in position to make plays,” he said. “It gives us an opportunity to be tops if we just work hard, follow his rules, follow his coaching and buy in.”
