Denver’s pass-rush duo catches attention

Posted Nov 24, 2011

The Chargers did not allow a sack against Chicago and executed well in pass protection. They’ll need a repeat of that this week against two of the NFL’s best at taking down quarterbacks.

SAN DIEGO – Seven sacks.

That’s how many Von Miller and Elvis Dumervil have collected in three games, torching opponents with elite speed off both edges.

“They’re just hard players. They don’t stop. They finish the play out,” said Brandyn Dombrowski, expected to start at left tackle. “They’re not going to let up. They’re fast, they’re strong and they’re good rushers.”

Denver’s defensive speed isn’t limited to two players, Head Coach Norv Turner said, characterizing the entire 4-3 front as fast.

Miller, with 9.5 sacks, is in position to challenge Jevon Kearse’s rookie record of 14.5. Miller sacked Philip Rivers once Oct. 9 despite a somewhat limited snap count. At the time, Dumervil still was less than 100 percent coming off Reserve-Injured the season before and facing another minor injury. The two have been among the league’s elite of late.

“It’ll be our first extensive look at (Miller),” Turner said. “We’ve got to do a great job.”

San Diego did not allow a sack against San Diego despite missing three starters on the offensive line, a scenario that may not change this week. The performance, though, is history to Dombrowski.

“That was last week,” he said. “We’re worried about this week.”

ANOTHER MAN DOWN: The offensive line is expected to take another injury hit. The team placed center/guard Scott Mruczkowski (concussion) on Reserve-Injured.

CONSIDERED AGAIN: The late Don Coryell again is getting Hall of Fame consideration.

The former Chargers coach is one of 26 modern-era semifinalists. Six of those are non-players, including two coaches, Coryell and Bill Parcells.

The candidates will be reduced to 15 finalists in another round of voting, with the results to be announced in January. Coryell was a Hall of Fame finalist for the Class of 2010 before passing away July 1, 2010.

Among the long list of those that have lobbied for his inclusion are John Madden, Joe Gibbs, Dan Fouts, Charlie Joiner, Tony Dungy, Mike Martz, Kellen Winslow and Dick Vermeil.

EMULATING TEBOW: Receiver Bryan Walters wore the Broncos’ No. 15 jersey Wednesday, running the scout team offense impersonating the opponent quarterback, which is normally Billy Volek’s responsibility.

Walters ran the option as a high school quarterback, though his running style is a bit more jitterbug than Denver’s Tim Tebow.

How does Walters try and emulate Tebow?

“You know he’s going to scramble. That’s not always on the card,” Walters said. “They want me to scramble and really just get back there and wing it sometimes.”

GOOD HISTORY: Since the 2007 uniform redesign, which included new powder blue alternate uniforms, the Chargers are 8-2 wearing the popular threads.

San Diego will wear them Sunday against Denver, their first of two appearances this season. The Chargers also will don the powder blue jerseys Dec. 18 against Baltimore.
