Defensive Touchdown Ties for Tops in the League

Posted Dec 9, 2012

The Chargers had just gone up 20-3 when Ben Roethlisberger dropped back for a quick wide-receiver screen.  Fortunately, the defense read it perfectly as Jarret Johnson mauled David Paulson, pushing him into the trajectory of the ball.  Since it was thrown backwards, it was a live fumble.  As the ball bounced around the back of the end zone, Quentin Jammer dove on top of it

“I just saw it as a reach blocker,” Johnson said as he relived the play. “It was a weird little play but I read it well. I just spun out and got good leverage. I did a good job to knock him back and pushed him and the ball hit in (in his backside). From there we pounced on it for the score.”

“That’s who we are,” said Johnson, who was proud to hear they now tied for the lead league in defensive touchdowns. “We get after the quarterback and go after the ball.  That is what we’ve worked on since day one of training camp.  When we are aggressive good things happen.”

An 11-year veteran, Quentin Jammer entered the season having never scored a touchdown in his career.  Now, the cornerback has two to his name and said the reason behind it is the defensive mantra the team lives by.

“The ball’s on the ground, the whole defense is going to get after it,” he said. “We play until we hear the whistle and if that ball is live, we will have 11 guys going toward it. I mean, I didn’t even see what happened on the play.  But I hear the crowd and I see it loose and people running, so I went as fast as I could and luckily I got there first.”

The score was the defense’s seventh of the season, which ties the Chicago Bears for most in the NFL.

“We’re just working hard,” said Eric Weddle. “We’re running to the ball and playing hard.  We’re practicing what coach (John) Pagano is teaching and we’re working off of it.  It feels great.  Things haven’t been going great for the team, but I’ll remember (these defensive efforts) for a lifetime.”
