Corey Liuget Terrorizes 49ers with Dominant Effort

Posted Aug 24, 2014

The defensive end impressed against one of the NFL’s toughest offensive lines.

Corey Liuget only played about a quarter, but the defensive end turned major heads with a dominant performance against a highly-regarded offensive line.  The four-year veteran notched four tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, two quarterback hits, one forced fumble and one pass defensed to spearhead a resurgent effort by the Chargers starting defense.

After the game, Head Coach Mike McCoy was asked if the NFL knows just how good number 94 is.

“They watch the film,” he said.  “We as a staff know what kind of player he is.  The people on our football team understand that, but everybody has an opinion.”

That opinion was overly positive Sunday as he terrorized Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers offense from the very start.  Liuget burst through the line on the first snap to pummel Frank Gore for a two-yard loss.  On the second possession he flew around the outside and mashed Kaepernick for a strip-sack to give the Bolts the ball in the red zone.  Later, when it looked like the 49ers were poised to score a touchdown, he helped stall their drive with a batted ball and tackle for loss on consecutive plays to limit the damage to a field goal.

It’s safe to say that Liuget was in a zone. So what did that feel like for him?

“It feels pretty good to be in the zone and not out there thinking,” he said.  “To not think while you’re out there is pretty good.”

Donald Butler couldn’t agree more and was cheering on his teammate loudly.

“I was screaming ‘Go get that quarterback Corey!’” he chuckled.  “That makes my job a lot easier.  I just have to run around and make tackles around you.”

Liuget is popular among his teammates not only for his skill on the field, but for his humble nature off of it.  True to form, he was quick to credit the others on defense rather than boast about his strong game. He came away encouraged by what they can all do when they perform in sync.

“We played pretty well,” he said.  “We came out and tackled as a defense.  We did a good job and executed what the coaches told us to do all week which was to tackle and be sound.  We were motivated as a team.  We got our butts kind of handed to us last week, and we knew we had to come into this game and tackle and make sure we got off the field….That was one of the best offensive line groups on a very (talented) offense too, so to come in and play the way that we did defensively I think is excellent.”
