Congrats Novak! AFC Special Teams Player of Week

Posted Dec 24, 2013

For the second time this season, Nick Novak has been named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week.

For the second time this season, Nick Novak has been named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week.

The Chargers kicker knocked in four field goals against the Oakland Raiders, connecting from 27, 28, 33 and 48 yards out.  After the game, Philip Rivers praised Novak as being a huge weapon for the Bolts.

“Nick’s an offensive weapon,” he said. “When Nick’s on the field, he scores points. Much like a receiver or running back, seriously, when he’s been on the field, like you said it’s consistently almost every time, when he’s jived out there, we’ve scored points…When you have a kicker that’s valuable like Nick is, it’s a huge weapon for you. Yes, you want to score touchdowns and yes, you want to be aggressive, but there’s a time when it’s touchdown (or) check-down, and let’s make sure we get to three. Let’s give him chance to get to come out here and get to three. He was again clutch today.”

When the opportunity arises, Novak says he relishes the opportunity to make a difference.

“I want the ball,” he said.  “I love to be in a situation to help my team. You always have to prove yourself.   As long as you’re in this league, you’re always competing.  I love that part of it.”

Novak’s earlier Player of the Week award came following the Week 6 win over the Indianapolis Colts when he also had four field goals coming from distances of 31, 33, 34 and 50.  For the season, he has connected on 32-of-35 kicks, with only one true miss as two others were blocked.  He sits two behind John Carney for most field goals made in a season for a Charger, and is now 11-for-11 on attempts of 40-yards or more.
