Chris Watt: "A Lot Faster than What I'm Used to in College"

Posted Jul 27, 2014

The rookie guard took first-team reps on the fourth day of training camp.

Getting acclimated to training camp can be tough for rookies, but 2014 third-round draft selection, Chris Watt has enjoyed his time working the field in his new, blue and gold uniform.

“This is the first time for me (in pads) since November,” Watt said.  “So I’m really excited about it.  Obviously there’s a couple transition days here and there but once you put the pads on that’s when you can tell who the hitters are and who’s backing away.”

Watt exited day three of camp early due to dehydration but didn’t miss a beat during Sunday’s afternoon padded practice.  He took first-team reps, blocking some of the Chargers’ grittiest defensive linemen.

The 6-2, 311-pound guard was a crucial element to a stellar offensive line at Notre Dame during his time as a member of the Fighting Irish.  While versatile in pass protection and run blocking, Watt has seen his time at training camp as a means of improving his game.

“(I want to) Improve on little things like my first step in pass protection making sure I get my feet underneath me.  I want to make sure I’m always giving good effort and if I’m not, I know it’s not good for me (because) I keep that as my MO.”

Offensive linemen are commonly known as one of the tightest groups in football, but with a new team, sometimes you never know how the veterans react to the rookies.  Luckily for Watt, he’s had nothing but good things to say about his teammates.

“They’ve helped me learn this offense and helped me with my technique.  Specifically Nick Hardwick, Jeromey Clary, (Johnnie) Troutman, (Rich) Ohrnberger, those inside guys have been a tremendous help to me.   …We know we have a great group of guys in our offensive line room that make it fun, but also want to work hard so that makes coming to work everyday pretty fun.”

Even though he hasn’t played his first game in the league, Watt recognizes differences in the game from the college to professional level.

“It’s been great (and) definitely a learning experience,” Watt said.  “Everyone mentions speed (as a difference).  The speed’s really big.  The speed of the linebackers is very different; they’re a lot faster than what I’m used to in college.  Our D-linemen are big guys who are quicker here too.”

Don't forget, Saturday marks the team's annual FanFest at Quacomm Stadium.  It's always a highlight of the summer and is an event you won't want to miss.  Click here for more information.
