Charlie Whitehurst Sparks Bolts Offense

Posted Aug 15, 2013

Charlie Whitehurst provided a spark for the Chargers.

Game two of the preseason did not start out well for Charlie Whitehurst

The veteran quarterback fumbled his first exchange with center Nick Hardwick, putting the ball on the ground.  Chicago recovered and on the ensuing possession kicked a field goal to put them up 20-0.

From there on out, however, Whitehurst had an outstanding game.  He led three touchdown drives by completing 9-of-13 passes for 97 yards, two touchdowns and a 130.4 passer rating.  By the time he left the game he’d rallied the Chargers to within one score of the Bears.

“He did a nice job minus the first snap he took when he put the ball on the ground,” said head coach Mike McCoy.  “Other than that I think he did a good job.  He’s a veteran and he’s played a lot of football.  It didn’t rattle him at all.  He just kept on going.  And that’s all part of it. So he did a nice job of leading the offense down the field.  He did what we asked him to do.”

Philip Rivers liked what he saw out of Whitehurst as well when he came in to relieve him midway through the second quarter.

“Charlie was obviously in a good rhythm and he felt good,” said Rivers.  “He put together some nice drives.  He was really throwing it well.  You could see he was seeing it well.  He’s a good player.”

So how did Whitehurst feel he did out there?

“I felt good,” he said. “I had a good week of practice so I was excited to get back out there.  I thought offensively we did some good things.  Obviously we turned the ball over, but we did some good things out there.  I just took it one play at a time no matter what the situation is.  You just try to execute and move it down the field and put points on the board.”
