Chargers trade for Crayton

Posted Sep 3, 2010

SAN DIEGO – The Chargers added veteran wide receiver Patrick Crayton on Friday in a trade with the Dallas Cowboys for undisclosed considerations.

"We felt Patrick would be a very good addition to our team," General Manager A.J. Smith said. "He brings double value. He is a good, experienced receiver and also a punt returner.

"We are excited to add him to the mix. We also feel his familiarity with our system should get him up to speed quickly."

Crayton, a 6-foot, 205-pound receiver, is in his seventh NFL season.

Crayton has averaged 41 catches for 596 yards and five touchdowns since ’06.

“Oh my. Oh my. I’m excited about the offense, man. Very excited,” Crayton said. “They’ve got a bunch of weapons and I’m just happy to be a part of it.”

The receiver feels like the system will be similar because Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett played quarterback for Dallas under Chargers Head Coach Norv Turner when Turner held Garrett’s position in 1993.

Crayton has 196 career receptions for 2,888 yards and 23 touchdowns since Dallas drafted him in the seventh round out of Northwestern Oklahoma State in 2004.

“I’m going from a contender to another contender,” Crayton said. “It makes you that much more anxious to be a part of that and to get on the football field and play.”
