Chargers sign eight to future contracts

Posted Jan 12, 2011

San Diego retains most of their practice squad players and adds two free agents.

SAN DIEGO – The Chargers have signed eight players to Reserve/Future contracts since the regular season ended Jan. 2.

Six of the eight were members of San Diego’s practice squad this season: linebacker Jeremy Leman, offensive tackle Ryan Otterson, offensive tackle Nick Richmond, cornerback Traye Simmons, receiver Bryan Walters and offensive tackle Eric Young.

The Chargers also signed tight end Dennis Morris, a sixth-round draft choice by the Washington Redskins in 2010 that was not on an NFL roster during the season, and defensive back C.J. Wallace.

Wallace played in 26 games for Seattle from 2007-09 and recorded 19 tackles on defense while playing primarily on special teams. Wallace spent 2010 with Las Vegas Locomotives of the UFL.

PERMISSION GRANTED: The Chargers have granted the Miami Dolphins permission to interview tight ends and assistant head coach Rob Chudzinski for their offensive coordinator opening.

Chudzinski, who spent the last two seasons with San Diego, was offensive coordinator at the University of Miami from 2001-03 and again for the Cleveland Browns from 2007-08.

SKILLED KIDS: The NFL punt, pass and kick national finals are Saturday in Atlanta prior to the NFC Divisional Playoff game between the Falcons and Packers.

Two of the 40 finalists, listed along with the NFL team that hosted their regional competition, are representing the Chargers.

The first, Jayla Medeiros of Kealakekua, Hawaii, is one of four 6 and 7-year-old girls that will compete for a championship. The other is Gabrielle Ewing of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, who is one of four 12 and 13-year old girls that are finalists in her age group.

Contestants will launch one punt, one pass and one kick with scores based on distance and accuracy.

Now, you can stay in touch with the team anytime, anywhere, on your mobile device with the official app of the San Diego Chargers.
