Crompton becomes first Chargers draft pick to sign.

SAN DIEGO – One down, five to go.

The San Diego Chargers signed fifth-round pick Jonathan Crompton on Wednesday.

The rookie quarterback, the first Chargers selection to sign, agreed to a four-year contract.

Crompton is in line to be the team’s third quarterback, behind starter Philip Rivers and backup Billy Volek.

“They’ve been through the fire and they know exactly what goes on, so you try to pick their brain and see what goes on and try to learn from it,” Crompton said.

He played under four offensive coordinators at the University of Tennessee. As a senior, the strong-armed, 6-foot-3 quarterback completed 58.3 percent of his passes, threw for 2,800 yards and racked up 27 touchdowns against 13 interceptions.

He led the Volunteers to a 7-6 season that culminated in a trip to the Chick-fil-A Bowl and included a heartbreaking 12-10 loss to eventual national champion Alabama.

“He has a live arm,” Buster Davis said during the first week of OTAs. “The biggest thing for him is not being afraid to just throw the ball.

“It’s just him getting the timing. He’s new; the game’s probably a little faster for him and he’s got to get used to it.”
