Chargers receive "Exemplary Community Service" award

Posted Jun 8, 2012

Chargers Executive Vice President-Chief Executive Officer A.G. Spanos was the special guest at a luncheon on Thursday where the Chargers were given the “Exemplary Community Service” award at the Rotary Club 33 of San Diego’s second annual Heilbron Awards.

The Heilbron Awards was designed to recognize small, medium and large public and private companies that exemplify the pay it forward spirit – that give of themselves and their professional expertise to advance the well-being and success of others in the community.

“My family is honored to have been a part of this community for more than 25 years,” A.G. Spanos said after accepting the award on behalf of the team. “We’re pleased we have been able to use the team’s visibility to directly assist the community by providing badly needed resources and awareness of critical issues.”

The Chargers have a long-standing tradition of being committed to the community and in particular programs that help youth and families through the Chargers Community Foundation.

The Chargers Community Foundation has provided more than $11 million to support programs throughout the county. For more than a decade, the foundation’s premier program, Chargers Champions, has focused on improving physical fitness in San Diego county schools by providing grants for athletic, physical fitness and nutrition programs on area campuses. Selected grants have funded everything from installations of new jogging paths, outdoor fitness stations, new weight rooms and even salad bars.

San Diego schools can currently apply for physical education and nutrition grants through the Chargers Champions School Grant Program at http://www.chargers.com/community/chargers-champions/applications.html.  Applications must be postmarked by June 29 in order to be considered.
