Chargers plan to regroup

Posted Nov 11, 2011

Traffic hadn’t dispersed from Qualcomm Stadium on Thursday night before San Diego’s players began fortifying themselves mentally and resolving to fight like crazy again next week.

SAN DIEGO – There was no doubt Thursday night after the Chargers lost a third game in 11 days and four consecutive overall: things aren’t going well.

The Bolts are doing the only thing they can at this point, taking a few days away from football after a brutal stretch of the schedule that coincided with a rash of injuries and some agonizing losses, planning to regroup Monday and aim for a win against Chicago.

“We have the group in this locker room to get it together,” Quentin Jammer said. “We don’t need a rah-rah Gipper speech. We all need to be better, starting with me.”

A stretch that began with a botched snap and subsequent overtime loss on Monday Night Football in Kansas City continued with a shootout loss to the NFL’s best team Sunday followed by a four-day turnaround against Oakland’s physical, fast bunch, another tough-to-digest loss.

“That didn’t feel good,” Antoine Cason said. “(But) we can’t sit around and think about the negatives. Keep fighting and keep playing.”

The Chargers’ bodies are weary and it would be difficult for their minds not to be as well.

“Guys need to get away (this weekend) and figure out what we want out of this team individually and collectively,” Eric Weddle said. “We’re not going to shy away from this and hide behind anything. We’re going to stick together, keep believing and keep working hard. Our play has just got to be better collectively.”

Once this weekend’s stretch of games is finished, San Diego will be no worse than one game back of first in the AFC West with Denver and Oakland remaining on the schedule. But the Chargers won’t be focused on the big picture, turning their minds instead toward ending a four-game losing streak by finding a way to beat Chicago. What could’ve been a celebratory weekend now will shade toward reflective.

“Every individual’s got time to look at themselves, see how as an individual they can make the team better and just rejuvenate,” Nick Hardwick said. “Refresh, mentally and physically, come back in with a positive attitude on Monday and be ready to go on a run.”
