Chargers host USA Football forum

Posted Apr 10, 2012

Youth football commissioners from across Southern California attended the USA Football San Diego County Youth Leadership Forum on March 31 at Chargers Park.

Fifteen representatives of San Diego County leagues met at the Chargers facility, illustrating the team’s commitment to youth football throughout the region.

The Chargers and the Spanos family are the largest supporters of youth football in San Diego, and the team’s ongoing support of USA Football reflects that priority.

USA Football West Regional Manager Bassel Faltas led the meeting. Participants discussed background checks, coaching education, player safety, league registration efficiency, fundraising and how to become affiliated with USA Football, the official youth football development partner of the Chargers, the NFL and the league’s other 31 clubs.

For San Diego Youth Football and Cheer commissioner Phil Lomax, this was his first USA Football forum.

“It is important to get San Diego youth football leagues integrated into what USA Football is doing,” Lomax said. “I was at the forum primarily for finding ways to screen and prepare the coaches better and see what USA Football was going to be doing for our organization.”

Lomax coaches the Mira Mesa Youth Football team and formerly worked at coaching clinics with former coach and USA Football technical advisor Tom Bass before leading the 5,000 player league.

“As a commissioner, you have to be much more aware of the product as a whole,” Lomax said. “How are you servicing the families and preparing and selecting and screening the coaches? Even as a coach, you’re always aware of safety, but you get a new perspective of safety as a commissioner.”

This July, USA Football will host the annual NFL/USA Football Youth Summit in Canton, Ohio.  Commissioners were invited to submit an essay stating why they are the best delegate to represent Ohio for the summit.  Approximately 200 coaches and league commissioners from all 50 states participate in the annual event to discuss topics vital to the continued success of youth and high school programs.

One essay will be selected as the winning entry to join commissioners from each USA Football State Forum in Canton.

Mira Mesa Youth Football and Cheer president Kevin Bush also was at his first USA Football forum and had his first opportunity to discuss league issues such as fundraising and parental involvement with other league leaders.

“It was most beneficial talking to the presidents and league commissioners and getting feedback on how they run their leagues and fix problems that come up,” Bush said. “That interaction was most beneficial, and it brought increased exposure of USA Football in Southern California. It was really helpful for our league.”
Now, you can stay in touch with the team anytime, anywhere, on your mobile device with the official app of the San Diego Chargers.
