Chargers: We Have to Get Back on Track

Posted Nov 4, 2013

After a tough loss, the Chargers have turned their focus over to the Denver Broncos.

There is no denying Sunday’s loss to the Washington Redskins stung.

Minutes after the game ended, Nick Hardwick said it felt like he died a little inside.

Jarret Johnson called it extremely disappointing.

On Monday, Head Coach Mike McCoy reiterated how every loss is painful in its own unique way.

“Every loss (hurts) if you ask me,” he said. “It doesn’t matter what time of the season it is (or) when it is.  This game is all about winning. That’s what we’re in this business for, to go week in and week out to win the game… It always stings and then you hope the next Sunday can come tomorrow morning just so you can play another game to get that bad taste out of your mouth.”

However, the time to lament about the defeat has passed.  The Chargers team has turned the page and is now focused on the upcoming task at hand, which is defeating the division rival Denver Broncos.

"We have a good group of leaders here,” McCoy continued.  “With the coaching and the veterans we have here, we just have to get back on track. That's what we have to do this week- come back with the right attitude. We'll have a great game plan going in come Wednesday and we'll be ready to go."

The players agreed with their head coach, reasserting that while they will learn from the mistakes made on Sunday, they won’t feel sorry for themselves.  Their focus is solely on the Broncos.

“We’ve got to get coached up, listen to our coaches and we’ve got to get ready for Denver,” said Eric Weddle. “Everything is still right there ahead of us.  If we don’t come out ready to rock and roll on Sunday, we’re going to get blasted, so we’re excited about the opportunity to go play Denver at home and try to get back to our winning ways.”

Eddie Royal echoed those same sentiments.

“You’ve just got to put it behind you as tough as it is,” he said.  “We did a lot of good things in the game. You’ve just got to learn from the mistakes and the plays that we didn’t make and try to bounce back… It’s going to be a great game (against Denver).  They’re playing good football right now. They’re one of the best teams in the league definitely.  They’re a high scoring offense and they’re playing great defense right now.”

For Kendall Reyes, while it is important to move on he too understands the team needs to learn from their mistakes in order to help prepare for the Broncos.

“You’re always going to be upset about losing, but you’ve got to use it to help motivate you going forward,” the second-year defensive end said.  “You use it to motivate you for the upcoming opponent, in practice and watching film.  It all works together.  You don’t want to lose any game no matter how you lose.  But it’s about using what happened to get better going forward.  That’s all that matters at the end of the day.”
