Chargers Struck with World Cup Fever

Posted Jun 17, 2014

Like the rest of the world, the Bolts have caught World Cup fever.

Minicamp kicked off on Tuesday, and as soon as the Chargers’ up-tempo practice came to a close, the team bolted to the locker room.

After all, they had to catch the end of the Brazil-Mexico game on TV.

Like the rest of the world, the Bolts have caught World Cup fever.

“I love to watch the World Cup,” said Nick Novak, who played soccer for 17 years.  “Especially watching the games with a lot of people because you get together with a bunch of people you may not know and you become best friends in a matter of seconds.  When you score a goal or when the national anthem is played we all stand up with a lot of pride.  So I love it.”

Keenan Allen, who happens to be a huge Brazil fan, led the charge Tuesday.   He watched the game attentively like diehard football fans do each and every Sunday.

Still, the USA’s thrilling 2-1 victory over Ghana on Monday was the main topic of conversation.

“I’m a big World Cup fan, and that game yesterday was crazy,” said Johnnie Troutman, who tweeted throughout the entire game.  “After we scored that first goal we lost control of the game.  Ghana was pressing the whole time and then they scored their goal.  Then when we scored the game winner I jumped out of my seat!   I screamed.  I am proud to be an American and can’t wait until Sunday.”

Jerry Attaochu was also glued to his TV set on Monday, cheering on the USA.

“I started watching the game here at the facility, then finished watching it at the hotel,” he said.  “It was crazy when that header went in.  I was looking at people’s reactions.  It’s great to see people recording it, like down in Atlanta and the Buckhead area.    So that was fun to watch.  I can’t wait for our next game.”
