Chargers Strike Late Night Deal with CB Derek Cox

Posted Mar 13, 2013

The San Diego Chargers signed cornerback Derek Cox, considered by many to be one of the top defensive backs available in free agency.

The sun had set hours earlier, but General Manger Tom Telesco and Chargers brass were hard at work Wednesday night.

When the dust settled, the team emerged with a new cornerback as former Jacksonville Jaguars standout Derek Cox agreed to terms on a four-year contract with the Bolts.

One of the highest ranked corners on the market according to ESPN, Cox is a 6-foot-1, 195-pound physical defender with excellent ball skills.  In four seasons, he recorded 203 tackles, 32 passes defensed and 12 interceptions while starting 44 of 47 games played.  His dozen picks over that span more than doubled his nearest teammate. This past season, Cox had 60 tackles, 11 passes broken up and four interceptions in 12 games.

Cox was initially a third round draft choice out of William & Mary back in 2009.
