Chargers Sign Baxter, Schilling; Ajirotutu, Molk Placed on IR

Posted Dec 4, 2012

With injuries ravaging the offensive line, the Chargers today brought back guard/center Colin Baxter and guard/tackle Stephen Schilling. In corresponding moves, the team placed wide receiver Seyi Ajirotutu and center David Molk on the Reserve/Injured list.

Baxter, a versatile 6-foot-3, 310-pound lineman out of Arizona, played five games with the Chargers in 2011 after joining the active roster on Nov. 19.  Prior to that, he played in three games with the New York Jets, including two starts at center.  Baxter spent training camp with the Chargers this season before being waived in the final round of cuts on Aug. 31.

Schilling, meanwhile, was a sixth-round draft choice of the Chargers in 2011 out of Michigan. The 6-foot-5, 308-pounder played in nine games last season and had two starts.  He saw the majority of playing time at both guard positions. Like Baxter, Schilling was one of the last players waived on Aug. 31.

Ajirotutu signed with the Chargers on Oct. 29 when Richard Goodman was placed on IR.  He immediately made his presence felt three days later against the Kansas City Chiefs when he had an acrobatic 28-yard reception on a key third down.  Ajirotutu suffered a hand injury in the most recent game against the Cincinnati Bengals that will now end his season. Overall, Ajirotutu finishes his 2012 campaign with three catches in three games for 45-yards.

Molk also suffered his season ending thumb injury against the Bengals.  The team’s seventh-round draft choice this past April out of Michigan, Molk has appeared in all 12 of the Chargers’ games but has played sparingly.  The majority of his snaps have been on special teams and as an extra lineman in jumbo, short-yardage packages.
