That’s for one major reason – Saturday marks the first padded practice of the 2014 season.
“I think we’ve practiced as fast as possible to this point in time, but now it’s a little more finishing in certain things you can do,” said Head Coach Mike McCoy. “Up front it’s hard obviously without pads and there are certain things you’d like to do, but tomorrow it will pick up for sure.”
“It is a lot different with the pads on,” said
“The biggest thing is that it adds some added weight, and it will take us a little while to get used to it, but it will be good for us,” he said. “It makes it more like a game mode. Being able to run in pads at full speed at practice is a big factor to get us ready for games.”
No one loves the game of football more than
“As far as for corners against receivers, it is good to get that feel of getting our hands on them,” he said. “It is easier when you use your hands at the line of scrimmage and get to be physical. It gives you that feel when you need to throw your shoulder in there or getting off the blocks.”
The session will also mark the first time the Bolts’ rookies practice in pads, which is something
“It’s going to make it more like it was practicing in college,” he explained. “All the OTA’s and the first two practices in camp were just in jerseys, and it’s harder to practice in that. So it’s exciting to be in pads and be able to go even faster.”
Perhaps no one summed up how the team feels about breaking out the pads more than
“It’s definitely something that we need,” he said with a bright smile. “It’s about time!”
Saturday’s practice is one you surely won’t want to miss, and luckily it is another one open to the public. Practice begins at 9:20am, but gates open at 8:20am. Parking and admission to all training camp practices at Chargers Park are free.
