Chargers Promote Cromartie; Patrick to IR

Posted Dec 16, 2013

The San Diego Chargers placed Johnny Patrick on IR with an ankle injury and promoted Marcus Cromartie from the practice squad.

The San Diego Chargers made a couple transactions late Monday afternoon.  The team placed Johnny Patrick on the reserve-injured list with an ankle injury, and in a corresponding move, Marcus Cromartie was subsequently promoted from the practice squad to the active roster.

Patrick joined the Bolts in February off waivers from the New Orleans Saints and appeared in 13 games this season with four starts.  The cornerback totaled a career high 38 tackles and tied his career high with two passes defensed.  He recorded the first interception of his career as well, picking off Ryan Tannehill in Miami.  Patrick also recorded the first sacks of his three year career too, notching 1.5 on the year.

Cromartie signed with the Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Wisconsin.  In four preseason games, he totaled six tackles and made a noteworthy hustle play to prevent a touchdown on special teams that drew the praise of the coaching staff.  He was one of the final cuts at the end of training camp and was immediately signed to the practice squad. The cornerback was an Honorable Mention All-Big Ten his senior year and by the time his senior year ended with the Badgers, he had accumulated 113 tackles and 16 passes defensed over four years.  Cromartie's signature moment came in the 2012 Big Ten Championship Game win over Nebraska when he returned his first career interception 29 yards and broke up two passes.
