Chargers Practice in Full Pads for First Time

Posted Jul 27, 2013

Saturday's practice will mark the first time the team is in full pads under head coach Mike McCoy.

For the first time this season, the San Diego Chargers will be wearing full pads; something that head coach Mike McCoy is very much looking forward to.

“It’s the next step,” said head coach Mike McCoy.  “It’s an opportunity for our team to really find out the guys that step up and who those guys are going to be. The game’s not played in shorts. The next thing, also, that’s very important to this organization and football team is to learn to practice in pads against one another. We’re not going to go to the ground all the time. Obviously, there are going to be certain days when we will. It’s a deal where the tempo is going to pick up a notch. Now, we’re going to fit guys up. It’s going to be fast tempo. A lot of the backs are coming through the holes and the linebackers are going to be there. They’re going to fit them up more press coverage outside with the pads on and everything. It’s the next step for a football team to take and we’ll find out who is going to step up.”

For those wearing pads, you can be sure their adrenalin will be pumping.  Even established veterans like Malcom Floyd admit to getting some butterflies when the pads come on for the first time since the end of last season.

“You know, it’s a little nerve-wracking but it’s not a real game,” he said. “You’re not going to get tackled.  But I think we will be a little more aggressive and physical.  You’ll hear some pads clacking”

Still, despite the jitters, players admit having pads on does make it a  more enjoyable experience.

“It’s always fun to put the pads on,” said Vincent Brown. “You hear some pads cracking and all that, so it should be fun in practice…A lot of the defense and linebackers (are excited). Maybe Manti Te’o or somebody might be most excited for that.  So they’ll run around and hit somebody.”
