The San Diego Chargers have been determined to make the 2013 training camp as fan friendly as possible.
As such, the Bolts made social media history by becoming the first professional sports team to team up with an instagramer group to hold an Ultimate Instagramer Contest and Instameet. An instagramer group is a social group that has a joint interest in taking photography in this new medium. An Instameet is when fans of the app meet at a location to take photos on instagram and share them with a hashtag. The event is another step in a process aimed at enhancing the team’s digital connection with the fans.
“I think it shows that we are looking hard at new media,” said Executive Vice President - Chief Executive Officer A.G. Spanos. “We created a digital media department last year which was a huge step forward for us. It’s been paying dividends for the organization by pushing the envelope and using new mediums to engage fans in ways that have never been done before.”
The Chargers and Instagramers San Diego have been planning the event for the better part of a month after meeting at Social Media Day San Diego. In part due to this, the Chargers had the largest training camp attendance to date with over 3,000 fans on hand. Of those, many took part in the Instragramer contest as nearly 1,000 photos were submitted.
“This is amazing and a dream come true,” said Claudia Sandoval, the general manager of Instagramers San Diego. “In my life if you had told me a year ago that I would be here in the media tent at training camp, I wouldn’t have believed you. And the grand prize is great. I’m jealous I can’t win!”
The grand prize Sandoval mentioned will be given to the person who submitted the best photo, and will be announced Monday night. The winner will join the Chargers on the field pre-game warm ups and coin toss for our pre-season opener against the Seattle Seahawks. And you can be sure the winner will be posting some great Instagram photos in the process.
