Chargers Great Walt Sweeney Passes Away

Posted Feb 4, 2013

Walt Sweeney, one of the greatest Chargers in franchise history, passed away on Saturday at the age of 71 following a battle with pancreatic cancer.

The Chargers drafted Sweeney with the second overall pick out of Syracuse in the 1963 AFL Draft. A standout guard, he made nine consecutive All-Star Games/Pro Bowls from 1964-72. Sweeney was an ironman, playing in 181 consecutive games with the Chargers and Washington Redskins.

In honor of his 11 stellar seasons in San Diego, he was inducted into the Chargers Hall of Fame and was a member of the Bolts’ 50th anniversary team.  Sweeney was also named to the AFL All-Time Second Team.
