Chargers Draft WR Keenan Allen in Third Round

Posted Apr 26, 2013

The San Diego Chargers have selected California WR Keenan Allen in the third round of the NFL Draft.

The San Diego Chargers used the 76th overall selection in this year's draft on wide receiver Keenan Allen.  Here is a prospect profile I wrote on him earlier this month:

"Keenan Allen is a coach’s dream.

Humble, hard-working, competitive, driven and a natural leader, he has the intangibles in addition to natural skills to be a productive wide receiver in the NFL.  Many have compared him to the Green Bay Packers’ Jordy Nelson, which would make him a big-time asset in any offenses’ passing game.

With his 2012 campaign cut short due to injury, Allen’s most productive season came as a sophomore. He caught 98 passes for an impressive 1,343 yards and six touchdowns, garnering First Team All-Pac-12 honors in the process. Before his injury, he appeared in nine games as a junior this past season, catching 91 balls for 737 yards and six scores.

Allen is capable of running any route coaches draw up and does so with smooth precision. He has great natural instincts, is relatively sure-handed and isn’t afraid to go over the middle and take a hard hit. Once the ball is in his hands, Allen is able to make defenders miss with both agility and physicality, willing to run through the opposition if need be.

According to scouts, the biggest thing missing from Allen’s game is elite straight away speed. He’s fast enough to get behind the secondary and can elevate to win one-on-one jump balls, but he doesn’t possess true sprinter’s speed.

Allen injured his knee late in the season, forcing him to miss the last three games of the 2012 season as well as February’s Scouting Combine.  Nonetheless, he’s still a highly touted prospect who has the type of game that will make him a favorite weapon of quarterbacks at the next level."
