Chargers Add Tight End John Phillips

Posted Mar 13, 2013

San Diego Chargers welcome dual-threat tight end John Phillips into the fold.

After having four tight-ends on their roster last season, the Chargers had only two on their roster entering Wednesday - future Hall of Famer Antonio Gates and promising second-year player Ladarius Green.

Now they have their third.

The Bolts signed former Dallas Cowboys tight-end John Phillips on the second day of free agency.  A sixth-round pick back in 2009, the 6-foot-5, 291-pound Phillips is primarily known as a blocking tight end. Still, he does have strong receiving skills as well.  He started eight games last season alongside Jason Witten, catching eight passes for 55 yards and a touchdown.  For his career, the tight end caught 30 passes for 218 yards and a pair of scores in 48 games.  He missed the entire 2010 season after suffering a knee injury.

The 25-year old Phillips has shown great versatility as a player, having lined up in the fullback position as well as out wide for the Cowboys in a number of their packages.
