Chargers & USAA Hold Military Kids Clinic

Posted Aug 27, 2014

The Bolts hosted a Play 60 clinic for military children presented by USAA.

Just hours before the San Diego Chargers took the fields at MCAS Miramar, approximately 150 military children took part in a special Play 60 camp presented by USAA.

While the Chargers hold numerous Play 60 clinics throughout the year, the team noted how it is always particularly meaningful to be able to provide this type of camp for those in the armed forced.

“It’s an honor for us to be able to be out here providing these children this wonderful experience,” said Director of Public Affairs & Corporate/Community Relations Kimberley Layton.  “They go through so much with a parent many times deployed serving our country, so for us to come out and provide this fun atmosphere is really wonderful.”

With ages ranging from 7-14, the children divided into five smaller groups.  They rotated through a number of stations focusing on a different aspect of the game, while also promoting living a healthy lifestyle by being active for at least 60 minutes a day.

“I think it’s amazing that these kids get the opportunity to do something that’s special for them,” said Captain Kelly McKenzie.  “They know this is just for them as military kids.  They move around with their families, and I think to get that chance to be highlighted and feel special and brought out here by some people that just love, the Chargers, I think they are just super excited to be here.”

Following the clinic, many of the children had a chance to watch a Chargers walk-thru alongside their parents and then get autographs.  Overall, it marked the end to a very special day they’ll never forget.

“This is so cool,” said 10-year old Taylor.  “To play and then meet the Chargers, this is the best.”
