Bolts to hire Barry, coaching staff complete

Posted Feb 6, 2012

SAN DIEGO – The Chargers’ 2012 coaching staff is set after San Diego agreed to terms with Joe Barry as linebackers coach Saturday.

Barry held the same position at USC from 2010-11 and has 10 years of NFL coaching experience, including two as a defensive coordinator (2007-08 in Detroit).

Barry spent 2001-06 and 2009 as linebackers coach in Tampa Bay. He coached for the 2002 Super Bowl champion Buccaneers, a staff that included Chargers assistant head coach-special teams Rich Bisaccia.

The Chargers have hired two former NFL defensive coordinators in Barry and secondary coach Ron Meeks, adding experience to compliment new defensive coordinator John Pagano.

San Diego also added former Colorado State coach in Steve Fairchild to give Head Coach Norv Turner another trusted set of eyes on offense and promoted Hal Hunter to offensive coordinator.

TURNING THE PAGE: As Lucas Oil Stadium workers cleaned confetti from the field in the wee hours this morning, NFL executives turned their attention toward impending free agency.

The conclusion of Super Bowl XLVI means all 32 teams now are pointed toward the 2012 season. The Chargers’ decision-makers, including team president Dean Spanos and General Manager A.J. Smith, will huddle this week to begin hammering down an analysis of the current roster and prepare a strategy with multiple contingencies for free agency.

The league year begins March 13, although many teams release players or announce which of their own free agents they won’t retain before then.

The Chargers’ players, too, have looked forward to the day after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell handed the Lombardi Trophy to the New York Giants.

“I think until the Super Bowl’s over, you haven’t quite put the year behind you,” Philip Rivers said last week. “As soon as Monday morning hits, we’re all 0-0 again and everybody’s chasing the next championship.

“I’ve grown as a person and a player to the point where you’ve got to be able to embrace and grow and be thankful for the good and the bad. We’ve got to move on.”

Now, you can stay in touch with the team anytime, anywhere, on your mobile device with the official app of the San Diego Chargers.
