Bolts Sign WR Lavelle Hawkins; Floyd, Freeney to IR

Posted Oct 1, 2013

The San Diego Chargers placed Malcom Floyd and Dwight Freeney on IR and signed WR Lavelle Hawkins and OLB Thomas Keiser.

The players had the day off on Tuesday but it was a busy day in the front office.

The San Diego Chargers announced that Malcom Floyd and Dwight Freeney were placed on the Reserve-Injured list.  Floyd suffered a sprained neck in Week 2 while Freeney suffered a quad injury last week against the Dallas Cowboys.

In a corresponding move, the Bolts signed wide receiver Lavelle Hawkins and promoted outside linebacker Thomas Keiser to the active roster from the practice squad.

Hawkins is a shifty 5-11, 194-pounder entering his sixth NFL season.   Originally a fourth-round draft pick of the Titans out of Cal in 2008, he recorded 71 catches for 771 yards and one touchdown over five seasons in Tennessee.  He’s also returned 14 kickoffs in his career for 335 yards, averaging 23.9 yards per return.  Hawkins spent parts of this past offseason with the New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers.  He recorded six catches for the Niners in the preseason for 82 yards.  His best game of the preseason actually came against the Chargers when he caught four balls for 62 yards and one touchdown. He also returned a kickoff 105-yards for a touchdown against the Minnesota Vikings.

Keiser was one of the final players San Diego released when the roster was pared down to 53, but was immediately signed to  the practice squad.  Before signing with the Chargers, he spent two seasons with the Carolina Panthers, appearing in 14 games and registering nine tackles, 4.5 sacks, five tackles for loss and one interception.   This preseason, he recorded nine tackles and 2.5 sacks.

Finally, the Chargers added two players to the practice squad; offensive tackle Andrew Tiller and running back Miguel Maysonet.

Tiller spent parts of last week on the Bolts practice squad.  A 6-5, 326-pound tackle, he played collegiately at Syracuse and was a sixth-round pick of the New Orleans Saints in 2012. Suffering  a triceps injury during training camp, he spent his rookie season on IR. Tiller was a two-year starter as a collegian for the Orangemen and a first-team All-Big East Conference pick as a senior.

A 5-9, 209-pound native of Puerto Rico, Maysonet went undrafted in April and spent parts of this past offseason with the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns.   He ran for 30 yards on 13 carries with Cleveland in the preseason while catching three passes for 14 yards. Maysonet was signed to the Indianapolis Colts practice squad on September 16th but then  released 10 days later. As a senior last season at Stony Brook, he ran for 1,964 yards and 21 touchdowns on 267 carries.
