Bolts Hold NFL Play 60 Camp on USS Ronald Reagan

Posted Aug 28, 2013

The San Diego Chargers held an NFL Play 60 camp onboard the USS Ronald Reagan.

The San Diego Chargers hold countless NFL Play 60 camps throughout San Diego, but Wednesday’s was unique as it was held onboard the USS Ronald Reagan.

Before the Chargers held a walk through on the deck, approximately100 children ages 7-to-14 from military families located on the base took part in the one-hour camp presented by USAA.

“As part of our salute to the military, we were working with folks from the Reagan and they wanted to do something for the families as well,” said Director of Public Affairs & Corporate/Community Relations Kimberley Layton.  “So we decided to hold one of our camps to help the kids get active and stay healthy.  Of course that is a big thing in the Navy, so we started to put together the plans for this camp.  This is amazing to have it on board this ship.  And the children are military children so they are amazingly respectful.  They are having a great time.  This is amazingly unique. We’re working today with members of the Navy family who are helping run the drills.  But just to be out here on a ship like the Reagan is truly an amazing experience.  We don’t often get a chance to put on camps in areas like this!”

The children were divided up into five different stations that focused on different elements of the game of football.  Some of the stations included drills focusing on passing, kicking and tackling.

“This is cool,” said seven-year old Gavin. “I get to play football and run around. It’s been fun. I like the tackling drill the best and getting the fumbles”

Afterward, the children joined their parents and had the opportunity to watch the Chargers walk-through.  The highlight for many after that was getting the chance to meet the players, take photos and have them sign autographs.

“My favorite part was meeting the Chargers,” said nine-year old Blake. “My favorite player is Antonio Gates, so it was cool to see all of them.”
