Bolts Don't Miss a Beat with Novak

Posted Sep 30, 2012

For most teams, losing your kicker 48 hours before game day is a recipe for disaster.

It’s a good thing the Chargers had Nick Novak’s number on speed dial.

The Bolt’s kicker last season, Novak flew to Kansas City with the team and was signed by the Chargers on Saturday afternoon after Nate Kaeding injured his groin during Friday afternoon’s practice.  He came through with a flawless performance vs. the Chiefs, converting all three of his field goal attempts from 27, 45 and 47 yards out.

“It felt like the culmination of all the hard work really paid off,” Novak said minutes following San Diego’s victory. “It was a great win, and I had a lot of great opportunities to contribute to it.  I always pride myself on being ready, and I have a great group of guys around me with Mike Scifres and Mike Windt.  It means a lot to me to represent the Chargers and wear the Bolt on my helmet.”

For the Chargers, it was like he never left.

“Nick was great,” said head coach Nov Turner. “I don’t think there was anyone on the team who felt like we brought a new guy in.  The guys know him and love him.  He’s been great for us.  He’s a great competitor and I just had great confidence in him.”

Whether Novak will kick again for the Chargers next week vs. the New Orleans Saints remains to be seen, depending on how Kaeding’s groin responds over the next couple days.  Regardless, Novak further proved vs. the Chiefs that he deserves to be kicking each and every Sunday in the NFL.
