A half hour later, he was the newest quarterback for the San Diego Chargers.
“I got a call from my agent, and he said San Diego wanted to see me,” Boller said following Friday’s practice. “So I packed up a couple of things, got in my car and drove the 25 minutes here.”

“I hate to see Charlie (Whitehurst) get injured, but I’ve known Kyle for a while and he has some great experience in this league,” said Rivers. “He’s got a little bit of a foundation in this offense from a terminology standpoint based on the previous places he’s been. I think it’s a matter of him just getting reps, but I’m going to be there anyway I can to help him along.”
In the meantime, Boller has a chance to prove he belongs with the Bolts, and head coach Norv Turner encouraged him to take the opportunity and run with it.
“When you get an opportunity to practice and be a part of an NFL team, you have an opportunity to be a part of that team,” he said. “You look at a number of guys we’ve had come into the team and end up playing significant roles, so to me anyone who steps out here has a chance to be a part of the team. We’ll find a way to keep the best guys. If you’re a veteran player and you have a two week opportunity to go in and compete and play, I think veterans know how to take advantage of that.”
