Sunday’s game vs. the Kansas City Chiefs is an important one for the San Diego Chargers. It’s a division game on the road coming off the team’s first loss of the season. But for two of the Bolts, this match means even more since
Battle began his career in 2007 with Kansas City and played in 48 games with them through 2011. He rushed the ball 190 times for 715 yards and four touchdowns and caught 14 passes for 76 yards.
“I’m going to treat it like any other game, but it definitely will be cool to go up against the guys I played with for all those years,” he said. “I think I might have an advantage going up against that defense. I mean, I practiced against them every day for five years, so I think it gives me a little bit of an advantage.”
Battle has been superb in his role as a change of pace back this season for the Bolts. He’s run the ball 17 times for 124 yards, averaging 7.3 yards per carry. He’s also crossed the goal line twice and showed he has big play ability with a 52 yard gain against the Falcons.
Meanwhile, McClain spent a single season with the Chiefs after starting the first four years of his career in Baltimore. Utilized in a different fashion than in his Pro Bowl seasons with the Ravens, the fullback rushed the ball just 15 times for 51 yards and a touchdown in addition to catching 14 balls out of the backfield for 82 yards and a score.
“I can’t wait for it,” said McClain. “It’s the first game that when you look at the schedule you circle it. I’ve been waiting for it for a long time. With the season, you just take it one week at a time, but now it’s finally here and I can’t wait for it. Just being there with those guys last year, I was happy to have the opportunity to stay in the division with the Chargers where I get to face them twice and show them what they’re missing out on.”
Nonetheless, McClain expressed that getting a win for his club is far more important than showing up his old team on a personal basis.
“The most important thing is to come away with the win,” he said. “Coming off a loss like we just did, this is a big game against a divisional opponent on the road. The number one thing I’m focusing on is getting the W, and if I happen to put up some big numbers against them in the process, well that would definitely be sweet.”
