Ball Security Crucial vs. Ball-Hawking Redskins

Posted Oct 31, 2013

The Chargers face off against a Washington Redskins team that thrives on scoring defensive touchdowns.

A theme all season long for the Bolts has been ball security.

Over seven games, San Diego has lost five fumbles and Philip Rivers has thrown five picks, totaling 10 turnovers.  That ranks tied for the eighth fewest giveaways in the entire NFL, and Rivers’ five interceptions are tied for the fifth fewest in the league.

"It's a major emphasis every week,” Head Coach Mike McCoy said about limiting turnovers. “You have to protect the football. Teams are too talented in all phases and there is a lot of talent on every roster, so you don't want to give anyone a short field, especially a turnover that creates a touchdown. We have to do a great job of protecting the football."

Ball security will be as important as ever this Sunday in Washington as the Chargers face a Redskins defense that thrives on forcing turnovers.  Not only that, once they get their hands on the ball they know how to score.  The Redskins defense has a league high five defensive touchdowns, including an NFL high four pick-sixes.

“They’re a good unit (that) has some good players in the back end,” said Offensive Coordinator Ken Whisenhunt.  “Veteran players (Josh) Wilson and DeAngelo Hall and their safeties have been together for a little while.  They’re veteran players so they do a lot of different things.  If you don’t pay attention to what you’re doing, that’s what can lead to mistakes.  That’s one of the things that we’ve got to make sure we’re good at.  We had a period early in the year where we turned it over a lot.  Obviously if you’re going to go on the road against an opponent like this, you can’t do those type of things.”

The chief culprit for the ball-hawking Redskins defense is Hall.  The 10-year veteran has three interceptions, two pick-sixes and one forced fumble.  Needless to say, the Chargers are paying special attention to Hall.

“He’s one of those (dangerous) corners,” said Philip Rivers. “We came up the same year (and he’s) been playing at a high level for 10 years. He’s one of those corners I put in the dangerous category because of his ability to go catch the ball and score with it when he catches it. He’s not just trying to catch it, he’s trying to score. Obviously they have five touchdowns on defense. He’s obviously a dangerous corner. So you’re smart with him. He’s crafty, he’s smart, and he has great ball skills.”

One of the men Hall is tasked with covering will be Vincent Brown, who has tremendous respect for the three-time Pro Bowler.

“He’s one of those great corners,” said Brown. “He’s been in this league a long time.  He’s established.  So we have to be smart with the rock. This is another opportunity for us to go out and try to get the win.”
