Back With Bolts, Whitehurst Excels

Posted Aug 19, 2012

It was déjà vu all over again for Charlie Whitehurst.  Two years after being traded from the Chargers to the Seattle Seahawks, the seven-year pro was back wearing the Bolts uniform in Qualcomm Stadium.

“It felt pretty cool to be wearing this jersey again,” he said in the locker room following the team’s win. “When you leave, you never know what’s going to happen.  I never expected to be back, but I’m happy to be here and it feels like I’ve never left. It’s the same locker room with a lot of the same guys, so it’s pretty fun.”

If his play Saturday night is any indication, the Chargers will be thrilled to have the second string quarterback back in the fold.

With the team down 10-0 at halftime, Whitehurst rallied his squad to a 28-20 victory. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound signal caller completed seven of 12 passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns.  He also finished the game with a very impressive passer rating of 132.6.

Whitehurst came out like a man on a mission, completing five of six attempts in leading the Chargers to their first score of the game.  The touchdown was a beautifully thrown ball to the left, leading Vincent Brown into the end zone past two defenders.

“You always like to start fast, so it felt good,” said Whitehurst. “We sputtered a little bit after that, and I had that fumbled snap which can’t happen, but it feels good to get that good drive under my belt and we picked up our play again towards the end.”

Head coach Norv Turner liked what he saw from his backup quarterback and thinks this offense fits him perfectly.

“(Charlie’s) very in control and makes good decisions,” he said. “Our offense fits him. He left and went to play in Seattle and came back here and was just a more mature guy.  He makes good decisions getting the ball out of his hands quicker, and has showed he’s an accurate passer.”

More than anything, Whitehurst relishes the chance to be back with the Chargers, and feels he’s primed to help the club if he’s needed to come in in a pinch.

“It felt good to be back out there,” he said. “I want to be as good as I possibly can in my role, which is to be the backup. Philip (Rivers) is the toughest guy in the league.  He’s never missed a start, but you just never know.  I’ll be ready though if the team needs me. So that’s my role and what I plan to do.”
