Allen, Fluker Named to PFWA All-Rookie Team

Posted Jan 14, 2014

Keenan Allen and D.J. Fluker were both named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team.

Yesterday, Ryan Mathews and Eric Weddle were named to the Pro Football Writers of America’s All-AFC Team.

Today, the PFWA recognized D.J. Fluker and Keenan Allen by naming them to their All-Rookie team.  In addition, Allen was named the Offensive Rookie of the Year as well.

Allen burst onto the scene in a big way in 2013.  The third round pick out of Cal led all rookies with 71 catches for 1,046 yards and eight touchdowns.  He set the Chargers team rookie record for catches and yards, and was the first to post a 1,000-yard season in the NFL since A.J. Green in 2011.  Allen posted consecutive 100-yard games on two occasions and was the first Chargers rookie to do so since 1960.  His five total 100-yard games is also a San Diego rookie record.  For his outstanding play, Allen won the Pepsi Next Rookie of the Week award four times and is now up for Rookie of the Year honors as well.

Meanwhile, Fluker contributed in a big way in his rookie season as well.  The first round selection out of Alabama started all but one game, and in the middle of the season, he stepped up immensely by switching to left tackle for five games.  What’s most impressive about that move is that Fluker hadn’t played left tackle since high school.  He earned the Pepsi Next Rookie of the Week award in Week 7 after switching to left tackle for the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.  It is a rare feat for an offensive lineman to win that award and is a testament to the impact Fluker had as a rookie.

Join us in congratulating Keenan Allen and D.J. Fluker in the comments below!
