Alexander Looking Like a Real Steal

Posted Nov 20, 2012

Week after week, much is being said and written about the play of Danario Alexander.

That’s because week after week, he keeps raising his game.

The 6-foot-5, 217-pound wide receiver has quickly, and surprisingly, become one of the most explosive wideouts in the NFL. In just his fourth game of the season against the Broncos, Alexander recorded a game-high seven catches for 96 yards and two touchdowns.

“I’ve just come out and worked hard every day at practice to get on the same page as Philip (Rivers),” he said.  “I’ve been able to stay healthy, and I feel like finally my talents have been able to show on the field.”

Alexander’s history of knee and hamstring issues is well documented.  But now that he is healthy, he’s showing just what he’s capable of.

“I’d say I’m an eight of 10 in terms of health,” he said. “I’m still a little sore getting into football shape.  I did miss about six weeks and didn’t have a training camp, so I’m feeling the effects of that.  But other than that I’m feeling really good.”

When asked about Alexander, head coach Norv Turner couldn’t stop praising the wide receiver.  He broke down why he is so dangerous and why he’s had so much success.

“Danario is a tough matchup for corners because he’s got a good combination of size and strength,” said Turner. “And he’s got good foot-quickness. So if they come up and try to press him, singled-up he can get over the top and go make plays. So now they back off a little bit and he’s got enough quickness to separate away. And he’s done a nice job on the routes that he runs well and we’re looking hard to add to that repertoire of routes that he runs well. He’s been here a month and he’s played in the last three games. He’s been a big help to us and he’s been a big help to Philip.”

Of all Alexander’s supporters, perhaps no one has extolled his virtues more than his quarterback.  That being said, even Rivers didn’t know just how good his new receiver was until a week ago.

“He has been awesome,” said Rivers. “I didn’t realize until about a week and a half ago that he led the whole country in receiving in 2009. He had 1700 yards or something and 109 catches or something like that at Missouri. He has had those injuries with his knee and hamstring and things that have kept him from really getting in a rhythm and flow with an offense. I think he fits our system great. He is a big target that can really run. He is good after the catch. He has been a big pickup for us and has fit in nicely.”

Although he’s only been here a month, Alexander has seen enough to know he wants to stay with the Chargers for the long haul and make it his home.

“I just want to keep playing every week and doing what I can do,” he said. “I’m loving it here in San Diego.  Hopefully if things continue this way, I’d love to stay here.”
