A Record Number of Runners Bolt to the Q

Posted Jul 21, 2013

A record 3,500-plus runners participated in the Third Annual Bolt to the Q.

Soon enough, Qualcomm Stadium will come alive with the sounds of Chargers football.

But on Sunday, thousands of runners poured into the stadium to complete the Third Annual Kaiser Permanente Bolt to the Q 5K and fun run. Presented in conjunction with the Chargers and Ryan Mathews, proceeds benefited the Trish & Ryan Mathews’ Door of Hope Chest, a non-profit charitable foundation overseen by the Salvation Army that helps provide homeless moms and children much-needed resources.

“It’s great to be here seeing all these runners have fun,” Mathews said while stationed at the finish line. “I’m standing here at the 50 yard line, and the smiles they have when they enter the stadium and finish is just a great thing to see. This whole event and day is awesome.”

A record 3,500-plus participants ran the course, with another 400 kids taking part in the ½ mile fun run. The course finished at the 50-yard line, where each runner was greeted by Mathews.  As they entered Qualcomm, they were able to watch themselves on Bolt Vision, and after completing the run received a medal.

Among the thousands of runners was a familiar face – Tom Telesco.  The Chargers general manager finished around the 24:00 minute mark, and he said he was motivated to run to help the Trish & Ryan Mathews’ Door of Hope Chest.

“The number one reason I wanted to run was to support Ryan Mathews and his foundation,” Telesco said moments after finishing the race. “It’s an unbelievable foundation.  It was a great atmosphere too.  I love to run so to be out here with the fans supporting a good cause was really a lot of fun.”

Having Telesco take part in the Bolt to the Q meant a lot to the Chargers running back.

“That was really awesome,” he said. “It’s for a great cause, and he told me a few days ago that he was going to run it and I couldn’t help but smile.  It means a lot to me that he ran today.”

Finishing in first for the third straight year was Roosevelt Cook, a professional runner who says the Bolt to the Q is one of his favorite races that he takes part in each season.

“It feels pretty good to defend my crown,” he said. “This is a very low key, fun race.  It’s the end of a very long season for me.  When it comes to this point of the year I’m tired, but I know I just want to put on a good show and enjoy the event.  I’m inside Qualcomm Stadium on the actual field!  And they gave us a football this year as we crossed the finish line. That was fun.”

Cook finished the race in 15:42, while the top female runner, Celestine Arambulo, ran it in 19:18.
