10 Questions with Greg Manusky

Posted May 18, 2011

Learn about the Chargers’ new defensive coordinator in this video, the first installment of a series with assistant coaches.

SAN DIEGO – Chargers defensive coordinator Greg Manusky has a knack for making things sound simplistic.

His aw-shucks style of answering questions is one of the things that caught Head Coach Norv Turner’s attention. During Manusky’s job interview earlier this year, Turner asked him about his goals.

The 12-year former NFL linebacker replied something to the effect of, ‘Well, win a Super Bowl,’ almost to say ‘What else is there?’

Manusky replaced Carolina Head Coach Ron Rivera on Turner’s staff in January, returning to San Diego after working as San Francisco’s defensive coordinator since 2007. His 10 years of NFL coaching experience include a five-year stint as the Chargers’ linebackers coach. He’s coached seven defensive players to Pro Bowls and his unit accounted for 42.5 of San Diego’s 61 regular-season sacks in 2006.

Outgoing and playful, Manusky coaches with passion and rarely hides his emotions. But the theory that his success is built on attitude and gruff goes out the window when you see him in his working environment at Chargers Park.

In his office, Manusky can’t seem to stop fiddling with formations and play calls for more than a few minutes, subconsciously returning to them mid-conversation on his computer, papers and sticky notes on his desk or the large projector screen that captivates his attention for hours.

As far as his 3-4 defense, he describes it with words like ‘hardcore’ and relentless.’

Find out if the man himself resembles those traits in a short video that takes a look at Manusky’s background off the field.
