Exclusive First Interview with Derek Watt

Shortly after the Chargers took him with the 198th overall selection, fullback Derek Watt called Chargers.com to give his first interview as a member of the Bolts.

Chargers.com: Congratulations, Derek!  How does it feel to be a member of the San Diego Chargers?

Watt: It feels amazing.  It's awesome that they wanted me, and I'm so excited to head out there and get started.

Chargers.com: What's it like to reunite with your former Badger running back Melvin Gordon, who you used to block for?

Watt: I'm definitely excited.  I got to see him when I went out there for my visit. Melvin has already texted me a few times today. We gel tremendously on the field. We're going to pick up right where we left off. I know he's excited.  I'm excited. It's going to be a great experience being back together.

Chargers.com: How do you describe your game?

Watt: I just try to do as many things as possible.  I try to be versatile. I want to be able to play and do whatever they ask me to do on offense and special teams.  I want to master my craft in every possible way and be valuable.

Chargers.com: How have the Chargers told you they plan to use you?

Watt: They told me they definitely want a fullback on the roster.  They said they are excited about me, and said I also have to make my money on special teams.  I have to be involved a ton on special teams and make plays.

Chargers.com: Have to ask you about your brother, JJ Watt.  We play Houston this year, so what will it be like to go against him?

Watt: That will be good! It will definitely be a special day because we've never had that opportunity in the past. He's already called me and is super excited for me.  He's as happy as ever.  It will be a great time. I think it will definitely be interesting to go against him.  He's obviously a tremendous player so it will be a great challenge

Chargers.com: How has the fullback position evolved since you started at Wisconsin?

Watt: People say it is a dying position, but there is definitely a need for it still.  You see other fullbacks drafted as well.  This is a great opportunity for me.  Fullbacks may not play as many snaps as they used to, but there is still a need.  You get the run game going, and you have to make an impact on special teams.

Chargers.com: How did Wisconsin prepare you for the NFL?

Watt: The program at Wisconsin is fantastic.  The offense there definitely uses a fullback, so the tradition we have and the coaching staff leads to success.  They definitely got me ready for the next step, so I am looking forward to coming to San Diego and continuing to better my game. To the Chargers fans, you've got a fullback now.  I'm going to come out there, work as hard as possible and make the team better.
